Seriously. PWX is going to be a VERY VERY good game. But this topic is about Smackdown! and the whole Smackdown! series. Seriously what is it that you don't like about Smackdown! ? Whenever I play this game I just can't stop! By the way I am a big wrestling fan! So...? What is it that you do not like about Smackdown! which I fail to see?
Spelling Smackdown! even though its not the end of a sentence!
But seriously.
I didn't dig the story mode. Also... I don't like the control scheme. They had a perfect scheme (nearly) with No Mercy. I just don't like it because No Mercy was so so so so so good. Also... Load times are a pain in the ass.
Sirdingus this is who Smackdown! is spelled. Smackdown! has a " ! " wherever it is in a sentence!!!! Do not judge if you do not know... By the way loading times are not that annoying! Spudz I agree I really wished it was ported for the PC. And concerning how to spell Smacdown!, I just told sirdingus.
SmackDown! I personaly kind'a liked the series although some of the controls sucked. But than again I haven't playe all of the SmackDown! Series. But My fauvorite is HCTP I really think that was the best smackdown game
I don't think people hate Smackdown, they just wish it did the gameplay better. I love playing Smackdown games, but it is kind of annoying when they don't improve gameplay when they should have by now.

lol i've been watching wrestling for o... getting closer to 2 decades now, I know how to spell it I just find it very stupid to see an exclamation point in the middle of a sentence. Always bugged me. Plus it was a joke
Secondly. I found the loading times very annoying. I am predominantly a PC Gamer so I am just used to 0 to 10 second loads not 2 or 3 30 second loads.
I love SYM, but I truly hate the SDvsRaw series. Why? Because it's pure button-smashing. You hit buttons without a plan and a serious tactic until you pinned that bastard. Also the grappling system. Once you've got the opponent in a grapple, the only chance for him to escape is to counter - and people that aren't that great in doing that have drawn the ass-card. And the meter-madness is just annoying to me: "Fill this, bring this cursor to this point, be carefull that this one doesn't gets empty...". The stupid and bad copy of the great Breathing-system from Fire Pro is also annoying as heck. Not to mention that there are barely any reasons to buy the sequel if you have the prequel. They just make the graphics better (or in case of the first SDvsRaw, even worse), add one, two or three new features, add new wrestlers and mayb three new matchtypes and voila, they have the next part of the series!
Yeah Sirdingus it's bugging me too but it's just the way it's written, and I do not know why. The loading times also depend on the ps2/xbox. If it's an old one or if it has been operational for too long (and thus it is overheated), it may be causing the slow loading time problem. Jetlag what is "SYM"? And yeah it's really annoying to smashing the buttons throughout the whole game. Especially when someone gets the "upper-hand" and starts doing the same moves all the time and you cannot block his attacks and you keep smashing the buttons all the time with no results. But believe it or not, I am so keen on wrestling games, particularly SvR, that I really do not care. Visit www.mdickie.com and download the free trial of Wrestling Encore. If you do not like button-smashing and bad graphics, you're gonna hate that wrestling "simulator"!
[cite] Jetlag:[/cite]Yes, SYM is Shut your mouth and by far the best Smackdown game. And I already know WEncore, and I fudgin love it :P
IMO, HCTP has the title of 'best in the series'. SYM was pretty cool too, though.
My problems with SvR are as follows: -Button-mash friendly gameplay. -Reversals are too easy to do, often turning matches into a reversal-fest. -Finishers are overpowered, turning matches into a race-to-the-finisher. -Mass removal of moves in every game. (200+ removed last year, only 38 added...to put that into perspective) -Constant gimping of CAW mode. -Broken as hell weight system. (Gregory Helms' Shining Wizard no-sold by Michaels? XD) -Bad selling. -Crap story mode.
I tried to play SD!vsRAW yesterday and I couldn't. It was woeful. Before KOC2 I used to play smackdown but craved something more - now i can't play it. It just feels really wrong.
How can SYM be one of the best smackdown! games? What 1000000% annoyed me about ever smackdown! until Here Comes the Pain and the following Smackdown! games, was the fact that no matter how much you kicked your opponent's @$$, they would always get up in less than 5 seconds. Which is totally unreal.
Okay I have played various SmackDown! series all the way back to the PSOne but on the subject of the newer PS2 SvR series ok in bullet point for here is my gripes with the games
+ Loading times, it makies me cry how long the game takes to load, on the later series it loads the entrances then loads the actual match, but if you take off the entrances to "save time" it loads a load screen :) (the SvR series only) + The storymode has improved but still sucks the big one + The fact that its always out-dated ( I know, I know it cant be helped ) This has cheered me up tho cos I thought the latest edition will FINALLY include Sabu.....but NO this edition seems to be more up-to-date than usual :( + The creation mode, looks like you could do so much, but when u get into it it just frustrates you + The fact that it is the be-all & and end-all of wrestling games (to the general public) + They bring a new one each year but without that much improvement + Instead of leaving good aspects of the game in the creators (YUKES!, I think) always tamper with it point in case in SM2 you could create your own PPV, this option was dropped till the latests edition but instead of leaving the PPV rating system you got in SM2, they took this element out rendering the make-your-own PPV pretty much useless + About 2 reversal annimation and because you can reverse easy you end up seeing the same animation over and over again. + After 3 months of playing at most (thats multiplayer as well ) it just bores/annoys me + On early editions (SYM I think dont quote me on it) in the CAW they gave you the parts to create Darth Vadar but because of the stooopid setup you cant use them on the same CAW (WHY WHY WHY WHY!!!!!!!!!!) + OH and the loading times (I know ive said it once but gawd damn you could read a book while waiting) they turn into 1/2 the gametime I reckon
Yeah,I remember the Smackdown! 2 game - It was kinda fun,but after you beat the game in "Story Mode" it just gets boring... And I also remember the loading screen annoying, but I don't remember it beign 2 hours - you don't wait long, but you wait a lot,get it? As I remember, you wait, the game asks you about the saves, wait a little more, pick an Exhibition match (Hell in a Cell,Rock vs. Undertaker) ,wait a little, shows titans and then you wait 10 seconds (counted) and play.
My biggest problem with the SD series was that unless you were purposely trying to draw out a match against the AI, you'd never go longer than 2 or 3 minutes.
I could write a book, but my number 1 complaint is no freedom. I don't want some boardroom executive telling me that big guys cannot do aerial moves, for example (as we've seen in real life that that is false). I don't want to be told my lucha guy can't have powerbombs because those are part of the 'power' moveset (as if lightweight guys can't pick up other lightweight guys? Come on). And don't even get me started on the lack of custom music despite hard drive support for both PS2 and Xbox360.
I think lucas can have all the moves but heavys like bigshow should not be able to do a dragarona. I used to hate seeing a big ol'e Gothic moster with red hair doing hurricanranas. But the only big guy I saw do a aerial move is Scott Steiner he created the frankinsteiner ( hurricanrana off the top). The only thing I hated about Smackdown is in deep PPVs. They should have a logo maker, fireworks, rope colors, arenas, lights, ramp, and theme music. Then while picking matches you can have people interfair, lightings, and actullay pick your title matches. The best story mode was Smackdown 2.
[cite] Raven Ankh:[/cite]My biggest problem with the SD series was that unless you were purposely trying to draw out a match against the AI, you'd never go longer than 2 or 3 minutes.
This is my main problem, as well. Add to that a boring, repetitive storymode with zero re-play value and CAWs that look so out of place, when standing next to the actual characters in the game that it's not even funny and you get a game that I honestly have played maybe 10 matches since my brother bougt it, back when it came out. And every time I've played it, it's been because I thought "SD! vs. Raw can't possibly be as bad as I remember..." - but it WAS!
SvR is a very good game.. Perfect? I don't know about that. It's certainly the best 3D Wrestling game released in the United States, but considering serious competition is practically non-existent, that's not saying a whole lot. It depends on your expectations tho. If you want a good fast paced wrestling based fighting game, you won't be let down. If you want something that accurately recreates the psychology and artistry of a good wrestling match, you may have a hard time accomplishing that feat with what THQ gives us.
Sorry I should have clarified I meant modern games. I wasnt a big wrestling fan in the No Mercy days, so I dind't really play it, but looking back (I have tried it since) at the time it came out it was certainly the total package. Definately an ideal to live up to.
I'm glad PWX isn't trying to be a sequal to one game but incorporating the best features from all.. My ideal wrestling game would have a grapple systems imilar to Smackdowns (but less restrictive), customization as in depth as RAW 2s entrance editor (Seriously, that thing was _hot_, too bad the game was terrible), and no license! I want roster and gimmick freedom like Fire Pro has ;)
I Own A Gibson Les Paul said: "Well SvR is in my opinion once more perfect, plus it is even more fun if played by 2 players."
Then you must really truly not actually belong here, because PWX was envisioned as the REMEDY to buggy, not-even-CLOSE-to-perfect games like SmackDOWN! (and originally, WrestleMania X-8 for the GCN). And a fair warning: members like myself, Raven Ankh and DarkOffspring don't take kindly to people touting the supposed "superiority" of SmackDOWN! over games like No Mercy/Virtual ProWrestling 2, the Fire Pro Wrestling and King of Colosseum series(es), or the All-Star Pro Wrestling series. I just happen to be the one of them that'll respond with the kindest, most constructive criticism to SMARKDown! fans who mistake SmackDOWN! as the be-all, end-all of wrestling games. Hell, SmackDOWN's even beat out in pure wrestling-game awesome-ness by old games like WWF WrestleFest or CAPCOM's Saturday Night Slam Masters/Muscle BOMBER (but not the sequel, Ring of Destruction/SUPER Muscle BOMBER...that was utter tripe that tried to be Street Fighter 2 in wrestling trunks).
But wait, you must one of those people that slobber over Triple H having realistic bump-mapping on his nipples, while of course fapping all night (like, admittedly, lots of us do) over the hot 3d "Divas" who can't actually wrestle for shite, right?
Hmmm...I guess that last part didn't sound so constructive.
Hmmm... I guess that what you just said was CR4P... how can you possibly think No Mercy's better that Smackdown! HCTP or the following games of the series? I mean, No Mercy was a very nice game, but it cannot even stand close to Smackdown!'s (this concerns all Smackdown games from Here Comes the Pain and on) graphics and physics and overall quality. Sure, no game is flawless, and Smackdown has its bugs at times...but so do all games, including No Mercy! And WTF why are you being so offending? You act as if I just robbed your house or anything. Chill out dude, this is a talk over games, we shouldn't be like this.
Uhh No Mercy is the best north american-esque wrestling game ever made. No Smackdown game comes close. I still play NM and the mo TNA vs ROH today. Nothing is more satisfying. Smackdown can not beat NM. Graphics mean crap. Hell Raw for SNES or even Royal Rumble for SNES is more satisfying than any Smackdown game i've played
Lolz... even though I was wanting to defend Gibson... No Mercy easily beats any Smackdown. Still, you shouldn't be an asshole to him, we don't want to stoop to GameFAQs level.
True true! :) As I have said a thousand times - Smackdown is a gimmick money-making game. True wrestling games like No Mercy,FPW or PWX are sooo raaare...
In my defense, this is only after hearing loads of "SmcakDwon1 is teh ownzrs" stuff for so long, and even HERE, on a board for an ANTI-SmackDown game; I don't usually go off on people just for saying SmackDown's good, but come on, let's face it. SmackDown has 2 things going for it: the WWE franchise (which makes it the only viable option in the current state of wrestling games), and the fact that it's the best-LOOKING wrestling game available (better-looking than Rumble Roses, only because their wrestlers are custom-created instead of real-life). And speaking of RR, let's be real, Konami made much better use of the Yuke's engine than THQ/WWE did.
And if you thought I was being offensive, you should be glad Raven Ankh or DarkOffspring haven't rightfully torn you a new one just for having "SmackDown" and "perfect" in the same sentence. It's FAR from perfect, and still heavily flawed. No Mercy's ONE major flaw (the reset glitch) was the only thing keeping it from being closer to perfect than it already was, but its GAMEPLAY and CUSTOMIZABILITY (especially on an emulator, using RICE) still runs circles around SmackDown's retard-o-cade style and the fact that you STILL can't update wrestler clothing (which is usually the only thing many of us want to do with the default wrestlers).
Why do you all say FPW is so good when the graphics is so wack and I know that everybody say that graphics don't matter but DAMN! If FPW went 3D like SvR08(graphics) I don't think they will have 27 minutes and 47 seconds of moves and so many charectors
Ahhh you know what guys? I know I'm going to come off like a total peace making wussy here but PWX isn't so much anti-Smackdown or even anti-Yukes as it is anti-THQ and all big publishers. And I know I'm also being hypocritical seeing as how we openly negotiate with similar big bad publishers. But the thing is, PWX is really about giving power back to the gamers and ending the reliance on mainstream WWE games, even imports.
I marked for the first Smackdown game I ever played (2) and thankfully I was welcomed by the old Fire Pro community on Gamefaqs when I first learned about about Fire Pro D for Dreamcast even though at the time I saw nothing major wrong with Smackdown and was also put off by Fire Pro graphics. Thank God the Fire Pro community (at the time) welcomed me graciously ("Here's some edits and here's a great menu translation...you'll love it!") and since then I've been blessed with the greatness that was Fire Pro D, Giant Gram 2000, and Virtual Pro Wrestling 2.
All I'm trying to say is please be nice. 98% of all Fire Pro and KoC fans on this continent probably started off playing Smackdown and thinking it was perfectly fine.
That being said, I still wouldn't trade my N64 and VPW2 for a 360 and SvR 2007 or likely 2008. And yeah, let's get angry and nasty over politics and world poverty. Wrestling games are about having fun...even the crappy ones ;-)
Well yeah, I mean, I totally loved SmackDowns 2 and 4 (in fact, I still think those are the best in the series, bar none), but everything after 4 was a clusterf--- of great graphics combined with poor WRESTLING game mechanics execution. And in this workaday world, with all the pressure to make graphics 3d just for the sake of 3d, SPIKE/HUMAN stands out as the CAPCOM of wrestling games with their not-really-for-beginners 2d Fire Pro Wrestling series as a whole. And when the only thing being complained about Fire Pro is the fact that it's not 3d, then there really is no actual reason to hate on it.
Ok here we good I been wanting to make all my points clear about Smackdown! on a board were maybe people will see it my way..
1. This game isn't a wrestling game its a fighting game with grapples play online you will see want I mean
2. The damage system is faulted all people use online are maxed out super heavyweights so its pretty much pointless to use ne thing lower than heavyweight
3. I bet most of you didn't know the game has unblockables in it yep has had them since the first SvR maybe others to this goes back to point 1 of it being a fighting game not a wrestling game people pretty much spam these online to just get a win..
4. The same old BS every year of them removing parts and moves from the CAW mode why they do this I have no clue it makes no since cause if my memory is right FPW has never had moves removed unless they are over powered most of the time they keep what they got and add it to if someone could give me a count how many moves are in FPR
5. the last thing I hate would have to be the weight class stating and how things are done with that why couldn't they have just made it were you have a skill set and your stats are based on the types of moves there are I can't remember but didn't they do that in Smackdown 2
But lets just hope my memory is right and that I did hear the project manger say that this is the last Smackdown game in the series...
That doesn't mean that there won't still be new WWE games coming out in the future. That just means that they won't be under the "SmackDOWN! vs. RAW" moniker anymore.
Remember how it took Acclaim 3 years between WrestleMania: The Arcade Game and WWF WarZone? Then another 2 or 3 years between WarZone and WWF Attitude (which, although still not nearly as good as a Yuke's or AKI engine game, vastly improved on much of WarZone, putting it in the top 5 wrestling games at the time). But with THQ trying to force a new WWE game every year now (like Madden) without actually improving on the parts that actually WORKED, they have officially created alienation between us (the fans) and the SINGULAR WRESTLING GAME FRANCHISE that they're trying to cram down our throats just because the alternatives take so long to show up.
Yep there ya go I think I have said it before wrestling games need way more than a year to make thats more than likely the main reason why we haven't seen ne thing for TNA's game..I just hope its everything Joe and AJ says it is..
Smackdown is a wretched, wretched beast. Where can we possibly start?
1. Lack of building things up with each game A lot of franchise games suffer from this. But Smackdown overall has a tendency to be the same game year after year with only a few minor tweaks to it. Different wrestlers, different story mode, but it's always the same exact game. The gameplay hasn't gotten better or any more realistic, it's still the fast paced button mashing arcade style that will never be able to simulate a legitimate wrestling match in normal gameplay and normal gaming style.
Rather than expanding with every game, Smackdown limits things, moves and CAW parts don't always carry over. CAW mode isn't expanded, it's essentially getting a brand new Mr. Potato Head with new parts and having the old ones taken away. Maybe you liked the big red nose, and all that there is is a horrendous, bright blue Triple H-esque honker for a large schnozz. They seem to keep it the same size, rather than going upward and outward with it.
Lots of people play for the CaW. I myself have almost never played an actual wrestler in any CAW featuring game I own. Maybe it's the fact that my other favorite game is the incredibly customizable City of Heroes, in which you can make your character look like just about anything you can think of. They never remove parts, they may change them a little bit to fix bugs, but with each update they add new parts, and all the old favorites are still there.
2. Bugs and Glitches Every year the games are pushed out the door and they all of some sort of graphical flaw that makes things look yucky or are frustrating. The N64 games, to my recollection, only had the No Mercy erase bug, which was likely caused by taking the Japanese original game (VPW2) and removing sections of code, rather than simply leaving them in, but having them unaccessible.
Smackdown's bugs may not be so dire, but they're stupid little things that make the game designers look lazy and the QA departments looking like jokes. They don't take the time to perfect their game because they rely on the strength of the license knowing that everyone will buy the game because it has WWE on it and Batista's nipples in Smackdown 2009OMGWTFGLOL have more polygons than a No Mercy model. Which leads me to the next point.
3. Graphicgasm Smackdown looks pretty. Yes it does. Just a pretty widdle cuddly game, aren't you pwecious? Yes you are! It looks stunning because the game creators don't have to do much of anything aside from creating and updating the character meshes. Each character has their own mesh, their own unique collection of polygons. As a result you can get very detailed with them and have them photorealistic. This is a problem. Why?
Because in No Mercy all the characters were based off of a small set of meshes with differing colorations, textures, and clothing objects to make them look unique. As a result the CaW's in No Mercy look just fine standing side by side with Stone Cold and the Rock.
In Smackdown CaW's look poorly done and out of place standing next to Batista and his 4000 polygon count nipples. SD! has had the problem through all of it's existance. My CaW's always looked garish, flat, and low rez when coming face to face with a WWE wrestler. At one time they had no mouths, no teeth, no tongues, just a neon pink void inside their heads.
And you can't change the wrestler's looks. Due to them being essentially hard wired into the game with incredibly detailed outfits (and nipples), you can't change them one iota. It's impossible to create a myriad of parts and options for each and every one of there 50+ unique character models. Hulk Hogan is stuck in the red and yellow /white and black, no matter how much certain individuals want to color his attire green and brown, have him carry a pipe, and be referred to as "Butt Blowgun" master of the Big Stinky Leg Drop.
4. Talking Big, Doing Small Every year we're told that there's going to be big, grand, wonderful changes to the series which will make us all cream our jeans and scream for joy. Adding of course to the mess made by our previous graphicgasms. It turns out that most of the time these big promises are nothing but painful, hurtful lies to lure us back after our last beating. We're battered gamers, essentially. We've been waiting for a legitimate wrestling simulation game since No Mercy, and have found ourselves without one year after year as Smackdown clings to it's 12 cans a day arcade gameplay habit.
All the promises of features are meant to lure us back after our last abusive experience, only to find ourself donkey punched and handcuffed to another $50+ piece of plastic for another year.
5. It's a WWE game, not a Pro Wrestling game While the Smackdown games may cater to the WWE's programming where it's only a rarity where a match goes longer than 5 minutes, the rest of us are left out in the cold, with presumable wet jeans, handcuffs on, and the back of our necks really aching when it comes to having a game that plays like our ideal version of wrestling. Smackdown makes it impossible to have your wrestler perform in any style that is not WWE, and if you try, the system punishes you for it.
As mentioned the SD games also share the same raging hardon Vincent Kennedy McManpackage has for large men, in that it rewards Big McLargehuge, but leaves the Tiny Terror unable to compete. The Tiny Terror is not named after Hornswaggle's member, by the way.
In short, it's not really a pro wrestling game. Now, take your handcuffs, you moistened jeans, and your bruised neck and move on to a different topic, if you will.
"Shut your godforsaken yap. Only people on Speed, Crack, and MASSIVE amounts of caffeine with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder could possibly find a Smackdown game even REMOTELY entertaining."
I hate the SDvR games - the graphics are okay when they are still but the linking between animations is crap, people just appear facing the other way when they hit the ropes. It'll be a shit wrestling game or a shit beat'em up.
Yes, but with my method their ADHD kicks in and they wander off, turning their back to me and allowing me to get a damage multiplier when I smack them with a shovel.
