hey i wanna ask about 2 things:
    1) will there be a referee in PWX?
    2) will there be match commentary in game?
Thanks, thats all for now :D....

Commentary would be useless, and costly at that. You are the wrestler you don't hear them talking.

As for the referee (which I believe they HAVE confirmed as a presence in most matches) thing, the real question should be "What will Referee physics be like"? You know, in terms of referee skills and abilities (and whether the referee moves will disable certain move situations if you choose a wrestler as a Guest Referee).

Id like to see a combo to lock on to the ref, lets say a shoulder button and the lock on button. That would rule. Make it impossible to lock into him any other way. Still have t possible to accidentally hit him, as it happens sometimes.

I agree with JustinSane it can happen where u lockup with the ref by accident so this idea is a clever way of stopping this problem if its easy to implement

"You are the wrestler you don't hear them talking."

That's the silliest excuse for not having commentary, but I do agree that commentary is worthless.

Something about the referee - I have watched some NJPW and I see that (at least in 1 match) the referee gets involved - he doesn't just count to five to break some illegal hold - he gets between the wrestler and tries to break them up - that's something we kinda saw in the MDickie games - and THAT is something really worth seeing in-game...
About the commentary - probably not - too much cost for something that's never gonna sound perfect...

The main reason wrestling games haven't been successful with in-game commentary in the past is generally because they haven't:

    a) included enough lines for all the noteworthy actions and events in a match.
    b) included enough lines describing the state of the match/ a wrestler's condition and performance/ the atmosphere in the arena.
    c) used non-repeating random number pools to ensure that lines will not repeat unless all the different phrases for a particular occasion have already been said.
    d) ever considered the idea that audio quality has any effect on how well reviewed a game will be.
    e) ever had to worry about selling a game based on any features other than graphics.

It is true that commentary would be a tough challenge for the team, and would mean that they would have to do a lot of work without using other games as references, but then again I'm sure there are plenty of other things in the pipeline to which this applies.

Patches and expansion packs could perhaps add in-ring commentary to the game. I assume that it wouldn't hinder progress too much, as commentary doesn't need to modify the gameplay in any way; it only uses various in-game states as triggers for the audio.

I'd be willing to help out if there is ever a demand for my slightly northern accent to provide some play-by-play.

I am not a fan of in game commentary at all because its rarely done right.

Instead of commentary...i've just rather have a commenatator or 2 sitting by ring side playing the part but never saying anything...going through the motions. Just for cosmetic reasons.

I agree a ref should break up holds forcefully. I agree my lock on idea is a good idea aswell, lol. :p I think, if you are going for a game where you are the wrestler it should be first person, but if you are going for a watching wrestling experience, commentary will be necessary eventually. That will eat up a lot of space... So its okay to not worry about now. Gameplay is necessary plus, I'd like to put on music while playing.

I think commentary is pointless for many of the reasons stated.

It gets too repetitive, it very rarely describes what is going on IN the match in the ring, it can't portray the mood in the arena, etc.

I wouldn't waste a dime of money into producing commentary until you have just about EVERYTHING else in the game.

Not only is it cost prohibitive, it DOES use up resources...so it can also make the game run at less than optimal conditions.

And about the referee - the American referee should be chickensh*t and just count to 5 - the Japanese bad-ass ref should break holds with force...at least that's how it's done in real life...I think...

"I wouldn't waste a dime of money into producing commentary until you have just about EVERYTHING else in the game."

Fine by me. So long as it makes its way into the package eventually. Perhaps an unofficial mod could rip the many thousands of samples from the THQ and Acclaim games and put them to better use.

Yes, but I'm the audience member sitting behind the commentary table. The better question is, why do I hear the slams?

Look there's probably no need of commentary just cause the sound of the voice of a guy u don't know can be replased by the sound of the crowd that's fast and easy to do.

Sorry, no commentary of any sort for PWX at this time for all the reasons stated above. We know we could do it better if we had the extra $$$ and time but....same old story!

Thing is, it would almost easier for us to rig up a simple event based audio trigger system and let the fan base contribute their own commentary sound files. Commentary mode packs? The results would depend on the modder but in theory it could be quite feasible.

True. I think the event trigger system would enable dedicated fans to give the game the sound they want without costing the team much time or cash.

if u guys read the name of this discussion u r going to see that i was talking about 2 features. U just saw the commentary and started to argue about how useless and hard to accomplish it is, but hey, no1 talked about the referee! im still asking myself if there is going to be 1 in PWX, cuz no1 from the PWX crew said anything about it and neither the 2 trailers did...

Even if PWX had money it shouldn't be wasted on commentary. Commentary has always been crap on every wrestling game. That money would be better spent on the referee. The referee focus button is an awesome idea and you shouldn't be able to grapple the ref without being focused on him. The ref also needs to be feeble like his real life counter-parts so that if he takes like one punch he's out for a few minutes.

I don't think the ref should be grapple-able at all. I can understand him being strikeable, squash-able, etc. But you never just grapple him.
  2.
Maybe for heels to throw him out of the ring or to pull him in front of an attack. Also in special-guest referee matches.

What monster heel has never powerbombed a referee? Even Awesome Kong has powerbombed referees. Referee grapples should definitely be in, just don't allow it to boost your momentum (much) or whatever.
  3.
well the ref should be everything a wrestler is except for grappling the wrestlers and striking them.
like in the first svr, where the ref threw you off the tb. you should be able to grapple and strike him, and after 1 time if you do it again you will get DQed.

as for commentary, i think SVR 07 pulled it quite well with jbl and cole, could be the fact i love jbl's color commentary, but still it was great, it beats music or no sounds at all except for the sound effects.
  4.
I think you're all missing a very key part of the issue.

There will be no commentary simply because it would only distract you from the cheezy 80's redneck rock music a-la WCW vs The World!

Best accompaniment ever to anything. I am dumbstruck by the fact that this same music is not used at live shows.

Super Fire Pro Wrestling X Premium. Best match BGM assortment ever prior to NJPW using "FantasMic" by Nightwish.

Kickass guitar sample (you know, kickass for 16-bit SNES), different styles of song, and it was relatively unobtrusive to the match.

    SFPWXP.
    FTW.
  6.
I have no problems with a ref being grappl-able ... I believe if that you lock onto the ref and attempt a grapple you should then have to hit the grapple twice or X Y A B button, as u would be DQ'd and after the first attempt your wrestler would argue or threaten the ref with a backhand or something ... ah la triple H! I'm not to concerned about the ref stepping into a deeper role in the game, jumping inbetween wrestlers I see being just as repeatitive as the commentary lines and more frustrating than button mashing 2nd players or computer controlled wrestlers who keep doing the same move. Commentary needs no place in PWX, its more fun to do your own either by yourself or with a friend. I'd actually rather see a wrestler stand infront of his designed backdrop and discuss what he was going to do to his opp. in there next meeting ... Ah la Ultimate Warrior ... although nobody could ever understand him ... like they did way back when in Saturday nights main event or superstars of wrestling in the earlky 90's and 80's for promos/ hype

Heck, it's almost harder to make ref NOT be grapple-able (word?) since they will use the same character rig for animations anyway.
