Kind of an odd question this week. As you know my dog Clive passed away a
few weeks ago. My daughter is having a rough time without a dog in the house
and I could sure use some company at the studio as well. I'm thinking of
getting a Malamute. Does anyone own that breed of dog and would you recommend it?
  1.
My sister in law used to have a Malamute mix. They're great dogs, very friendly, good with kids, and fiercely loyal. I'd say go for it.
  2.
Well I have 2 dogs. one a pitbull, who i think get a bad rap for all the mishaps their owners have. I mean my dog is very gentle, I have 2 kids and he loves them. If you treat an animal with love they will respond in the same fashion. And i also have a siberian husky. Both are great dogs the husky is a little too smart though, sometimes I think he thinks hes one of the kids and not a dog at all. I hear malamutes are great as well but Ive had alot of dogs in my lifetime and the huskies are my favorite. They are as loyal as can be and seem to grasp the concept of family very quickly.

    Huskies and Malamutes are great.

But Dave I'm gonna be honest. Don't go out and buy a dog because of its breed. Go to your local canadian pound, and find that little bastard that looks at you funny. That's the dog.

Tonzophunn is right - don't buy a dog based on breed. Definitely buy the breed that is based on what characteristics you are looking for, as well as whether or not you can deal with their varying types of habits. Overall, any dog is a good dog if you know what you want out of it. :)

As far as Malamutes go, they definitely are very gentle, and from what I hear, rarely barks unless provoked, and are easily trained. I don't know about their bad habits though. Good luck and have fun!

From what I've seen it really is "blame the owner, not the breed" with regard to violent dogs. I'll tell you though, the animal shelters around here are FULL of adult rottweilers. These poor dogs are likely going to be put down through no fault of their own and it's sick.

You're completely right Dave. Hundreds of those dogs are put down every week in the US because dumbass people want to train them to fight each other. I've had a few people call the police on me for even having one and that is just ignorance. Just because he's a pitbbull doesn't mean he's gonna hurt someone, but hey America discriminates on everyone and everything. You'd be surprised how many people get nervous when they see an Arab-American man in an airport. Its just nonsense
