WWE and THQ have announced a Legends of WrestleMania game due out in March 2009. Thoughts?

if they use the smackdown engine, then it will become the ncaa football of wrestling.

if they use a new engine, God forbid a GOOD engine, AND assuming I'm still not able to play PWX in March 2009, then wow.

in any case, I'm officially done with smackdown vs raw

Since its coming out in a year... not much time to build a new engine from scratch. I gotta go with it using the SDR engine

"The development capabilities afforded by next generation hardware, combined with our established history and deep understanding of fighting videogames, allow us to leverage the strength of the WWE brand to further extend our leadership in the fighting videogame genre and bring this new property to market."

Excuse me, but doesn't he know we all think his games suck?
Too bad it won't be for the PS2, I guess I will miss it...

If they were clever they'd have used this oppurtunity to start developing a new engine. Maybe they have done. Perhaps they have been working on a new engine for two years hence SD v Raw remaining the same. That'd be great. But that really isn't what's happeneing. This will just be SD v Raw with old men, I reckon. Still, might be okay...maybe?

When I first heard this I thought it was going to be the much talked about update of No Mercy for the download on the Wii but apparently it's an XBox game. Meh.

I hope they use the No Mercy engine!

But somehow i think with a legends roster the gameplay will not live up to what it should...look at Legends of Wrestling!

I am sure it will be better than LOW but not as good as it should be for wrestling fans who appreciate wrestling games with good gameplay like No Mercy & Fire Pro.

Like the man above said...most likely it will be based off the Smackdown engine.

I hope i am wrong!

My guess? We get a dumbed down SvR engine aimed at an even more mainstream crowd than it already is. Either way, a new wrestling game is a new wrestling game. Bring it on.
3.
I hope it plays like Wrestle Kingdom or Day of Reckoning I really liked the grappling system those games had.

That would indeed be cool. I still occasionally break out my DOR 2.

Surpringly enough I never did try Wrestle Kingdom.

That engine had some pretty good things about it, especially compared to the Smackdown games. That might just grab my attention when it comes out.

Does this mean the return of the blue cage?

I think that is what they will do as well. The game will be a bit simpler, and the CAW mode will be very basic, if they even put it in, as well as fewer match types. However, dumbing down the Smackdown engine may actually be a good thing. No Mercy at it's core is pretty basic, and of course, it works out wonderfully. Perhaps if they simplify Smackdown it will become more playable! (One can hope.)

And this game better be loaded with past wrestlers if it is totally dedicated to them! It would be great if the game offered bios, pictures or even video of classic moments, and some great stories of those days as well. It would be a great history lesson for all kinds of fans, and even be collectable.

The fact that all those SvR gimmick matches won't need to be in the game could go allow THQ to work on improving their wresting engine. Without newfangled finishers dominating the movesets there might be a greater presence of classic orthodox holds in the game as well.

Of course, this won't happen. Corey "Firepants" Ledesma will get our hopes up and we'll be lumbered with something barely rivaling Showdown: LOW.

What would be great is if the game installed the wrestlers onto your console so you could play as them in SVR.

Something interesting info that I forgot to mention earlier is that this game is only being made for the PS3 and Xbox 360 unlike Smackdown vs. Raw 2009.

This game will suck ass. Just like everything else they put out after NJPW4. I wish they went back to those days. If they use the wk engine it'll be an improvement but will still suck ass IMO. I bet Hulk Hogan will do the stylin ddt and the triple jump moonsault.

I think they should just make it like the upright classic arcade game WWF Wrestlefest. Anyone remember that? Just update the roster and add a ladder and steel cage match (not the tag-team one).

I would love to make a 2D game if given the chance. Blast from the past.
6.
I find a 2d game to be a lot more work than 3d now a days. i mean you can motion capture stuff now. Back them it was all one frame at a time.

True, but 2D is a lot more forgiving in terms of animations. Fire Pro animation are paced nothing like their real life counterparts and it's definitely an attractive medium.

I agree with you there but I think they are animated fairly realistically sprited. But I do see where youre coming from

Ign.com has some more info on the game and a video. From what I have read it looks like this game will be nothing like Smackdown.

It actually sounds more like a Wrestlefest "tier" grapple system.

i.e. hitting the grapple button early in the match produces a different result than hitting the grapple button later in the match.

See, I'm all for streamlining controller schemes but I almost get the feeling that they're dumbing down the controls to appeal to an older target audience. If you ask me it should be the other way around. Simplify Smackdown but give a deeper set of controls to us older dudes.
