Hey guys, I've ran into a bit of confusion here.

    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=091&active_tab=systemRequirements

That is the page at Microsoft for the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows. In that page, down at the bottom, it talks about the Connectivity. It say "Powered USB Port". I'm stumped. I have never heard of that term and I checked out wikipedia's entry on USB and it didn't really help me.

What is a Powered USB Port? My computer's a bit old so I'm worried it won't connect. I have two USB's in the front of my computer that are free to use. They are built in and were there since my brother bought it (it's his old computer, he donated it to us). I don't want to go for it and buy it and find out it doesn't work, wasting money in the process.

I just bought a 360 controller for my PC a couple months ago myself, in anticipation of Uprising.

The set up I got was a remote receiver that hooks up via USB.

Most USB ports are POWERED...meaning when you plug something into them they power the item and it does not require additional batteries. You shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Ah thanks for the answer. Sounds good.

When you said powers the item. It reminded me of my old mp3 player. I was able to put songs without having a battery in it. So I think mine is powered.

For a bit more detail in case you're curious, USB ports provide 5v of power. The controller probably REQUIRES the full 5v, which many USB hubs don't provide (They'll take the 5v from the main port and split it up, but many of these types of hubs come with optional power cords to provide 5v to each port). I'd guess that's why they make the distinction :)

Did you know Powered USB's recharge batteries? (At least for my MP3 Player and GSM)

depends on the device spudz, earlier usb devices don't always do that, but most newer ones do from what I've seen
  1.
Also, Most USB hubs that do not also plug into an electrical outlet may not be able to power the device. Especially if other devices plugged into it are currently pulling power (such as a mouse, scanner, flash drive, etc.)
  2.
just to let ya know ... if ya have a nold Xbox controller ( with a cable ) and an old USB conection cable you can make your own windows controller !! save your self the extra cash ... cut the ends and color connect the wires ( like connecting a new cd player in your car )(( wrap the copper threads with foil first and then cover with electric tape)) I have done this already and it works. A buddy of mine builds computers and told me about this. Works great !! much easier playing games too
