1) Sharpen you axe **************************
So the big debate around the studio is whether to bring more people on board right now to make Uprising bigger and better (and find the money) or to do the opposite, scale back any new content or even stop. Stop? Yeah, that's right, stop. Stop and polish what we have.
Here's the thing. We need to get Uprising out and it has to be fun. Over the last year we've regularly redefined what 'fun' is and made changes to the design to accommodate the every day realities of time and money. I don't want to ship Uprising without all the sexy things my idea of a great wrestling game should have. And the studio digs itself just a little bit further into a hole every day we keep adding new content and gameplay. But a few days ago I had a meeting with a guy who was CEO of his own successful game company until recently. He told me to stop. Stop and "sharpen your axe".
Wha?
He proceeded to tell me an inspirational little story that went something like this. Maybe you know it:
Two lumberjacks were racing against each other to see who could chop their pile of wood first. The first guy chopped like crazy, never resting, never slowing down, and was almost killing himself trying to get done. The second lumberjack took his sweet time, even taking breaks every so often. After a while the first lumberjack was stunned to see that the second guy was already done before he was! Tired, sore, and confused, he asked the second guy, "how did you finish before me? I never stopped but you were taking breaks and working half as hard?!"
The second lumberjack replied, "Because when it looked like I was resting I was sharpening my axe."
Wow, I've resorted to telling lumberjack stories...
But the point hit me like a brick to the face. Hard work and determination are the foundations of a successful project, but are we working smart? We certainly haven't sharpened our axe in a long long time.
2) Le Fire Pro Returns ********************************
So we Canadians got our shipment of Fire Pro Returns and we were all THRILLED to see that the instruction manual was in French. Ah well, you can download the English manual from the Agetec site anyway. I gotta say, you really don't appreciate playing a game with English menues until you try it after a year of messing with translation faqs. Makes me wonder how much more I'd play Wrestle Kingdom 2 if it was in English...
3) Link of the Week ********************
Darrell sent me this link last night. It's an interview with someone in the game industry and it's eerie just how closely his experiences match Darrell's:
A few weeks ago we asked you how we could save a generic looking character named G-Rush and make him look more interesting. With your feedback we decided to have a little fun with him and give him an Ultimate Warrior/ Demolition style gimmick. Please check him out in the website update this weekend and let us know what you think on the forum!
In the meantime and in-between time, that's it. Another edition of Wrestling Gamers United.
But, I would still love to see them in a game, as I don't think tassles have ever been included in a wrestling game before. At least none that I have ever played.
clothing that 'flows' is very complicated I think.. it's usually only in games with very large budgets, or from development houses with extensive experience
