Some Heads Are Gonna Roll

Interesting question from a PWX supporter recently, “Will there be the ability to decapitate your opponent?”

Uhhh, ok. Hadn’t crossed my mind really. My first reaction was that PWX is not Mortal Kombat but then I thought, wait a minute , with all the ragdoll physics and over the top bloody violence we already make possible could it be that people expect the game to go even further in that direction? It begs the question I ask myself with almost every design decision, “Am I forcing my idea of what a ‘real’ wrestling game should be upon our supporters at the expense of their freedom to play the game the way they want to?” And at what point does a wrestling game just become a murder simulator? I’m honestly way more conflicted by this seemingly innocuous question than I should be. We obviously have tons more core wrestling gameplay to develop before even entertaining anything like this but I suppose it is a question that will eventually need an answer. Just…you people are messed up 😉

Victim of Changes

I’ve been taking meetings almost every day (gee that sounds douchey) with people from all over the game industry from investors and bankers to console manufacturers and publishers and one sentiment is common among all of these people: the game marketplace as we know it will not exist by as early as 2020. Predictions and educated guesses vary in extremity but most do not expect even the biggest physical retailers like EB Games to exist anymore nor do they expect the survival of traditional revenue model “ship a finished game for one set price up front”. Free-to-play, subscription models, these types of things have shaken the traditional retail juggernaut and times they are a changin’.

The good news? Pro Wrestling X, it’s transparent warts-and-all development, and the community we have built here are going to Save Us. Your support of this project in the good times and brutal times are what have kept this project alive for years and you have helped us build a hell of a pirate ship that will not only weather the coming storm, we’re going to do it with flair and not compromise 🙂

I was talking story mode with a wrestler friend and he half-jokingly suggested that if we wanted authenticity we had better include the option to purchase opioid painkillers to reduce damage effects as well as the option to sell them to other wrestlers for extra cash. This is a guy who has crossed the country multiple times working almost every regional fed and he claims painkiller abuse among wrestlers is a real epidemic. His estimates are that 75% of active wrestlers today use them. Scary. I ain’t judging, believe me I get it. I guess we should be thankful that we don’t hear of more wrestler deaths and arrests than we already do. Take care of each other, please.

Question of the Week

Do you agree that physical game stores will eventually all die out thanks to digital distribution? If so, when? I’m skeptical. Book stores are still a thing after all and even vinyl records still enjoy a healthy, if small, popularity.

Quote of the Week

“I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence.” — Frederick Douglass

In the meantime and in between time, that’s it, another edition of Wrestling Gamers United.
